Department of English - Old Dominion University. The English Department is the largest department within the College of Arts and Letters at Old Dominion University. We are dedicated to offering rigorous academic programs that prepare our graduates for advanced study and a range of professions in writing, journalism, analytic fields, linguistics, and teaching. The Master of Arts (M. A.) program in English develops professional competency in literary and textual analysis and in writing. The program offers concentrations in literature, the teaching of English, rhetoric and composition, and professional writing. The program prepares students for further graduate study in English; for professional writing and editing; for teaching in secondary schools and colleges; for further study in such fields as anthropology, law, psychology, and philosophy; for careers in government and industry; and for other professions requiring analytical, literary, linguistic, digital media, or writing skills. Master of Arts in Applied Linguistics. The department also offers a Master of Arts (M. Master of Fine Arts. The Master of Fine Arts (M. F. A.) in Creative Writing is widely regarded as a terminal degree. It is designed to prepare students for careers as published writers in fiction, poetry, or creative nonfiction. A secondary goal is to emphasize not only preparation for college- level teaching (the practical vocational goal of most M. F. A. Offering opportunities for creative reinterpretation of these fields within the discipline of English, the program emphasizes research that examines texts in a variety of overlapping and sometimes competing language- based worlds. Our focus is on how the creation and reception of texts and media are affected by form, purpose, technology of composition, audience, cultural location, social practices, and communities of discourse. Students may pursue full- or part- time study through a combination of on- campus and distance learning courses. There are four concentrations: 1) Writing, Rhetoric, and Discourse Studies; 2) Literary and Cultural Studies; 3) Technology and Media Studies; and 4) Student- created concentration (must be approved by the graduate program director). The graduate creative writing program at Rosemont College is unique for a number of reasons. We offer tracks in both poetry and prose, and in. Creative Writing Curriculum . The minor requires 1. Creative Writing class per semester. The minor may be completed by pursuing a fiction track, a poetry track, a creative nonfiction track, or via multiple genres. Advancement to in either the fiction or poetry sequence is by recommendation of the student's previous instructor(s), and for both the Advanced workshops and year- long Senior Honors Seminars, by application. If possible, the student is assigned to a different instructor for each course. Should students not advance beyond the Intermediate level, they may choose to finish the minor with other classes offered in Creative Writing. An occasional intermediate- level course, which may focus on such topics as Living Writers, Poetic Forms, Poetry Imitation, and Prose Imitation, but which is offered every fall as Gram- o- Rama, the close study of language and grammar as tools of style, a class involving numerous short exercises and the collaborative development and production of a language- arts show based on original exercises. ENGL 4. 09 (Creative Writing: Special Topics) Permission of the Director of Creative Writing required. Creative Writing minors only. An occasional advanced- level course, which may focus on such topics as: advanced creative non- fiction; editing and publishing; the lyric in song, and collaboration between lyricists and composers; the one- act play; and short- short fiction. The Creative Writing Program also gives credit toward the minor to several courses offered in other departments - such as AMST 4. Advanced Seminar in American Studies (contact CW program assistant to make sure this course will count toward your minor); COMM 1. Writing for the Stage and Screen (if you are a Communications minor only); COMM 3. Drama/Fiction Writing; DRAM 2. Playwriting; and JOMC 2. Feature Writing. A student may seek permission from the Creative Writing Program to declare the minor once he or she has taken 2 courses and is on track to graduate with three more - without doubling up in any one semester. To receive a degree with Honors or Highest Honors in Creative Writing, students must maintain a 3. GPA and meet all other requirements to both enter and complete the Senior Honors Thesis (ENGL 6. Students minoring in Creative Writing must also plan carefully when intending on studying abroad and keep in mind submission and deadline requirements for applying to successive courses. The requirement for taking a minor in creative writing is five courses or 1. Students are limited to one creative writing course at a time. Most junior transfer students have four semesters remaining. Junior transfer students wanting to minor in creative writing must either: 1. Have an introductory course already on their record that will transfer to Carolina as credit, e. ENGL 1. 30, 1. 31 or 1. OR2. Take an introductory course via UNC–Chapel Hill Summer School prior to their first fall term at Carolina and be promoted to the next level or to another creative writing class (on a space available basis) in the fall of their junior year. Permission to move forward with transfer credit for an introductory course requirement (option 1 above) will require a review of the syllabus and work completed in the course by the creative writing faculty and is dependent on space availability, which cannot be guaranteed. Students must provide hard copies of syllabi and samples of course work as early as possible in order to ensure time for review. If not, they would need to complete the minor using the multi- genre approach. PLEASE NOTE: No more than 2 creative writing courses from other schools may be counted for credit here at UNC.
